Cats as with humans would normally receive their first lessons in life from parents but never the less kittens can be toilet trained from quite early on. Training will consist initially of merely introducing the cat to the litter box. It will no doubt explore the area to get the scent and the feel of the contents. Keep the box easily accessible and do not move it from location to location .

The cat needs initially to be placed in the litter box immediately following its meal and thereby suggesting to the cat the purpose of the box. If it does not perform as required try to limit the area of straying . If  it leaves the box and wants to wander off gently pick the cat up and return it to the box, pat the sand to get its attention. If you see success in your attempts then lavish praise and perhaps a small treat. If training starts to prove unsuccessful perhaps a new location for the box might be the answer, one with more privacy maybe. Should a mishap occur although firm correction is necessary it must not be overdone be firm and corrective but not loud and unreasonable.

The domestic cat can be taught provided that it is well adjusted and normal. The best way to get your cat to be obedient is to bribe it. You must keep it's attention in any way you can, cats will ignore their owners especially if you try too hard. However, once your cat learns that you will give it a small treat if it completes the task you will find more and more success with your attempts and with a little luck the cat will continue to perform to your wishes even after you cease to provide the treat or tidbits.

Cats will not act out of spite or revenge and they don't know the difference between what's right and wrong.  Do not ever use physical punishment that involves discomfort or pain!  Apart from being inhumane, such punishment may cause your cat to bite  in self defense or resort to some other undesirable behaviour.

When  not sleeping, cats will enjoy playing and therefore your cat should have safe toys to play with.  Get in the habit of playing with your cat  as that will not only help its physical and behavioral development, but will also help reduce any undesirable behavior.  Playing  with your cat will also help to strengthen the bond between you and enhance the quality of life for both of you.
