Cats in most cases will accept willingly commercial cat foods that can provide a well balanced diet but knowing the cat has a natural carnivorous diet more effective feeding practices may be necessary. Meat, fish, eggs and milk are essential to satisfy their requirement for protein, around 3o-40% of their diet.
The key to good nutrition is balance, a variety of meat products with carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals, concentrating more on the meat products, liver and kidneys.
Balance is achieved through variety with regular servings of meat, poultry, fish and other animal based foods. Too much variety though can create a fussy eater but choosing five or so different foods and rotating them in a regular manner should provide a sound nutritional diet for any cat.
Never attempt to feed your cat a vegetarian diet: cats have to eat meat to survive. . Some cats like cheese, yoghurt and scrambled eggs but remember that human foods are nutritionally unbalanced and should not be fed too frequently.
Water is a most important nutrient, as it regulates body temperature, transports nutrients, and aids digestion, as well as removing waste. Ensure your cat has clean, fresh water to drink from at all times, from a large ceramic bowl. This keeps their kidneys healthy, and reduces the risk of feline lower urinary tract disease .Cats do not have a very strong thirst drive and so it is important to provide water for the cat to ingest with its food. Canned foods are better suited to meet the cat's water needs. A cat consuming a predominantly dry-food diet will need to drink more water than a cat consuming a canned food diet.
